What is enigma?

Most people will think of a computer game, name of a band.
There is a web browser called the Enigma based on IE.
Enigma was also a encryption/decryption machine to send coded messages
by military and government services of several countries, most notably by
the Germans.

Enigma, according to Webster Dictionary on line is

e`nig´ma   Pronunciation: e`nig´må

n.    1.    A dark, obscure, or inexplicable saying; a riddle; a
statement, the hidden meaning of which is to be discovered or guessed.
A custom was among the ancients of proposing an enigma at festivals.

2.    An action, mode of action, or thing, which cannot be
satisfactorily explained; a puzzle; as, his conduct is an enigma.

Basicly, enigma is a riddle.  A statement that is puzzling, inexplicable, has a hidden meaning of which is to be discovered.
